A personal development coaching group is part course, part support group and part private coach.
Start becoming the best version of yourself: confident, powerful, successful, yet relaxed, with good communication and relationship skills; feeling good about yourself, being happy and having peace of mind.
Are you ready to take your personal development (growth) to the next level?
Create the life that you want, using both ancient and modern wisdom and techniques. Learn what works—the most effective attitudes, strategies, and methods—and what doesn’t. Learn how to let go of the thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that are creating suffering in your life and preventing you from achieving your full potential.
What Is A Personal Development Coaching Group?
It is a group of 6 to 10 students and one personal development coach (me), who meet for 2 hours, once per week, for 8 weeks. The group follows a planned sequence of activities and topics—so it’s a type of course—but it also dedicates abundant time to addressing the specific issues and questions raised by students.
In the first 8 weeks, we cover the most important personal development topics. In groups that choose to continue for additional 8 week blocks, the topics are customized to suit the needs of the group members.
The groups consist of about 25% lecture, 25% activities/processes, and 50% sharing/support and question and answers.
What Will You Get?
- Important information about life, personal development, psychology, philosophy, spirituality.
- You will learn a way of being, and a strategy for approaching your personal growth, so that you can become your own personal development coach. When I give advice, I usually don’t just give you the advice for that particular instance, I usually explain the larger picture, and I show you how I arrive at that advice, so that you will be able to apply the same principles to other situations.
- Opportunities to increase your self-awareness. As the ancient Greek philosophers said: “Know thy self.” You must first know where you stand, before you can make a successful plan to get where you want to go.
- Opportunities to gently stretch beyond your current limitations, and to expand into who you truly are. You are capable of living an enjoyable and fulfilling life.
What Happens In A PD Coaching Group?
You will participate in the following activities:
- Knowledge Transfer:
I explain an important topic for 5 to 20 minutes, which is usually followed by activities or discussion on the same topic. - Question and Answer Sessions:
These usually occur after a Knowledge Transfer, but also on any topic that students want to ask about. - Interactive Activities:
Students interact with each other, either in pairs or in groups. These interactions form the basis of subsequent activities, and are often an opportunity to grow—to gently stretch beyond your comfort zone—as well as to gain greater self-awareness. - Introspection:
Sitting with your eyes closed for a few minutes contemplating the previous activity. Noticing what comes up for you: feelings, memories, insights. - Intention Setting:
There is real power in setting a clear intention. People are often vague and wishy-washy: they say they “should do,” or “want to do,” something, but then they don’t ever decide to do it. Deciding to do something, and then frequently affirming that decision, keeps you on track. That doesn’t mean that you should be attached to achieving the goal—definitely not; nor that you shouldn’t change your mind. It just means that you have decided to go in a certain direction, and until something better comes along, that’s the direction you are heading. - Sharing:
Students share their thoughts about the previous activity, or what came up for them during introspection.
Sharing is very important for several reasons:- An opportunity to stretch and grow
Honest conversations about what you think and feel are difficult for most people. This is a safe environment to gain experience with such conversations. Look upon it as an exciting adventure where you get to explore unchartered territory and are guaranteed to survive and emerge better and stronger. - Hearing your own thoughts
You get to hear yourself saying things that may have only ever been thoughts in your head. There is a special power in saying something out loud because it becomes more concrete, more real, and that gives you a different perspective. Sometimes it helps you realize that it’s not true, and that you need to stop believing it. Other times it helps you realize that it is true, and motivates you to act on it. - Let others hear you
There’s great healing power in letting other people hear your honest thoughts and feelings. Research has shown that the majority of the therapeutic benefit derived from seeing a therapist comes from simply having somebody there who will empathetically listen to you. As the saying goes “A problem shared is a problem halved.” - Hearing other people
People can get stuck because they think there’s only one way of thinking about something. But when you hear different perspectives from real people sitting in front of you, it can shake you out of your rigid thinking, and open new options to choose from. It also gives you insight into how other people function, and the difficulties they face, which helps in two ways:- You develop more compassion and empathy for other people.
- You realize you’re not alone with your struggles—that other people face very similar challenges. Many people think that everyone else is happy and doing fine (as portrayed by their social media posts), and that it is unfair that they’re the only one who is feeling inadequate, unloved, and somehow ‘broken’. Finding out that many other people feel the way you do—that it’s ‘normal’—lifts that weight of unfairness and creates a feeling of fellowship.
- An opportunity to stretch and grow
